News from Missionary Jason Holt in Chile

Last night a massive 8.8 earthquake hit Chile.  Although we are several hours from the epicenter, we still felt 8.0 level shaking for nearly 2 minutes.  Three large buildings and several bridges near are church have collapsed.  Many are injured and more than 120 have died so far.

Tonight at midnight marks the start of Chile’s bicentennial anniversary.  There are many festivities this week and throughout 2010.  As a church we are planning our own bicentennial celebration.

I just saw a report about a local supermarket near our church that was held at gunpoint up for 20 minutes last night.  Just an hour before, a young man was shot in the stomach just a few blocks from our church.

Today is Chile’s Independence day.  We’re enjoying the day with the kids and the evening with a family from the church.
Pray this independence day that Chile will hear the message of Christ during our generation and come to know spiritual independence through Christ!

Just read in the paper this morning that 62% of children born in 2007 were born to single mothers.  In 1990 only 35% of children were born to unwed mothers.  This is just another reminder of the great spiritual vacuum in South America.  Chile doesn’t need another social program or better education to curve this trend.  [...]
